Rain, Rain Go Away

Oh well, another day, another drop of rain. After a perfectly good growing season, we’ve descended into a fall of cloudy days and warm nights……and rain. None of which is very good for finishing off a great apple crop. Don’t get me wrong, the apples are actually of better eating quality than in many other years due to the great sunshine and warm temperatures we’ve had all year long. It is just that the current lack of sunshine during the days and cool nights in the evenings is not allowing the fruit to color as it should. Color of course is a very important component of fruit quality. No, you can’t taste it, but you sure can see it. And the aesthetic qualities of anything really shape one’s perceptions of how good something is. So, if you happen to be buying apples and notice the color isn’t quite what you think it should be, just give it a taste. I think you’ll be surprised.
